10 Questions to Ask Before Buying Curtains, Blinds or Shutters

Choosing window coverings starts with what you need each room to do: privacy after dark, less morning light, better temperature control or easier everyday use. These ten questions explain the choices behind curtains, roller blinds, Venetian blinds and PVC plantation shutters.

Smart Pixel Blinds offers a free in-home measure across Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Logan and Ipswich. We bring samples so you can compare colours and finishes with your walls, flooring and the light in your own home.

1. How much do custom curtains, blinds and shutters cost in Brisbane?

Your price depends on the size of each opening, the fabric or material, the number of layers, the hardware, the operation and the installation requirements.

A single roller blind and a sheer-and-blockout double-track system need different materials and components. Even two curtains covering the same window can cost different amounts because of their fabric, fullness, finished drop and tracks.

Start with the rooms that matter most and a budget you are comfortable with. During your free in-home measure, we can discuss suitable options for those windows.

When comparing quotes, match the window sizes, fabrics, linings, tracks, controls and installation scope. Ask for any removal, electrical work, special access or other extras to be identified clearly before you order.

2. Should I choose curtains, roller blinds, Venetian blinds or plantation shutters?

Choose around the way you use the room, then refine the colour and style.

  • Sheer curtains soften daylight and the view through the window. Add an opaque layer where evening privacy matters.
  • Blockout curtains suit rooms where you want greater light control and a fabric finish. They need room for the track and the gathered fabric when open.
  • Roller blinds provide a compact fabric covering. Your fabric choice determines the balance of light, view and privacy.
  • Venetian blinds let you adjust the slat angle while keeping the blind lowered. The raised slat stack also needs space.
  • PVC plantation shutters provide adjustable louvres and a framed finish. Check the space needed for the blades, handles and opening panels.

Different rooms can use different products while sharing a coordinated colour palette. Compare samples beside the finishes you are keeping, and consider how each covering will look both open and closed.

3. Can people see through sheer curtains or sunscreen blinds at night?

Yes. When your room is lit and outside is darker, people outside may see shapes, movement or room details through sheer curtains or sunscreen fabric. Daytime privacy also varies with the fabric, lighting and viewing angle.

For a street-facing room or bedroom, consider two independently controlled layers: sheer and blockout curtains on a double track, or a blockout roller behind sheers where the window has suitable space.

Use the daytime layer when you want softer light, then close the opaque layer for privacy after dark.

Tell us when privacy matters most. If you already have sheers, check the view from a safe spot outside during the day and again after dark with your usual lights on. A small fabric sample helps compare weaves, but it cannot demonstrate the privacy of a fully fitted window covering.

4. Will blockout curtains or blinds make my bedroom completely dark?

Blockout fabric is designed to stop light passing through the material, but the darkness of the room also depends on the fit of the complete covering.

Light can enter beside a roller blind, over a curtain track, between curtain panels or around the hem. For a bedroom, the mounting position, fabric overlap, track arrangement and surrounding window details all matter.

At your measure, explain how dark you need the room to be and when you use it. An early-morning bedroom, a daytime sleeping room and a TV room may need different solutions.

We can assess the likely light paths and suitable ways to improve coverage. A photo taken when unwanted light enters is useful. The words “blockout fabric” alone do not establish a completely dark room.

5. Which window coverings can help keep a Brisbane home cooler?

Close-fitting lined curtains and suitably specified blinds can improve thermal comfort. Their effectiveness depends on the fabric and backing, coverage, air movement, glazing and the direction the window faces.

For a west-facing room, consider a covering with an appropriate light-coloured window-facing backing and a fit that limits gaps. Closing it before strong afternoon sun enters can help manage heat and glare.

Sheers are useful for softer daylight, but a sheer alone should not be relied on for substantial heat control.

External shading can reduce solar heat before it reaches the glass, so indoor coverings are one part of a home's heat-management strategy. Discuss the actual window and room conditions with us; a darker room and a cooler room are different outcomes.

6. Do I need made-to-measure coverings, and do you measure and install them?

Ready-made coverings can work where standard sizes and fittings suit the opening. Made-to-measure options allow the width, drop, mounting position and opening arrangement to be selected for your window.

Smart Pixel Blinds offers a free in-home measure across Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Logan and Ipswich. You can book without exact measurements; your suburb, an approximate window count and photos are useful starting points.

During the visit, we consider handles, flyscreens, recess depth, fixing positions, window movement and the space needed for curtains or shutter panels to open. For sliding doors, we also consider the path you use to walk through.

Installation services and any preparatory or access work are confirmed in your quote. For curtains, we agree the track position and finished appearance; for blinds and shutters, we assess whether a recess or face fit suits the opening.

7. How long will my order take, and what happens after I accept a quote?

The timing depends on your product selections, material availability, manufacture, freight and the installation schedule. Your order confirmation sets out the expected timing for your selections.

Our usual payment arrangement is a 50% deposit, with the remaining 50% payable before installation, subject to any applicable statutory requirements.

Before production, check the product, fabric, colour, heading, operation, opening direction, mounting position and agreed dimensions in your order confirmation.

Tell us about a move-in date, renovation handover or other deadline before you order so we can assess the timing. Once a custom-made order enters manufacture, changes may be limited and may affect cost or delivery. Contact us promptly if you need a correction.

8. Which coverings are easiest to clean, and what works in bathrooms or kitchens?

The easiest option to maintain depends on the material, the room and the product's care instructions. Smooth-surface shutters can be practical where regular wiping matters, while curtain fabrics and roller coatings each have their own cleaning requirements.

PVC shutter ranges approved for humid rooms are worth considering for a bathroom or laundry. The suitability assessment needs to include the finish, frame and hardware as well as the shutter material. Tell us about steam, direct splashes and the ventilation around the window.

For everyday care, follow the instructions for your selected product. Do not assume that every curtain is machine washable, every roller fabric can be scrubbed or every shutter assembly can be hosed down. Check before using bleach, solvents or abrasive cleaning products.

9. What should I choose for a home with children, and is motorisation worth it?

Start with an operating arrangement that reduces access to cords and chain loops. Depending on the product, this may mean hand-drawn curtains, shutters operated without hanging cords or a compatible motorised system.

Corded internal window coverings must have the required safety components and labels and be installed according to the applicable Australian requirements. Keep cots, beds and climbable furniture away from cords.

Motorisation can be useful for high windows, heavy curtains or several coverings that you operate each day. Ask us to confirm the options available for your selected product, including battery or wired power, charging access and controls.

App control, voice control and smart-home connections depend on the motor, controller and any required hub. Confirm compatibility before ordering so the chosen system works with the way you want to use it.

10. What warranty applies, and who helps if something goes wrong?

Warranty cover varies by product and component. For applicable PVC shutters, we offer a limited material warranty of up to 20 years. The structure, paint finish and other components have separate warranty terms, and curtains, sheers, blinds, tracks and motors have their own cover.

Your written warranty schedule explains the periods, inclusions, exclusions and any claim-related costs for the products supplied.

If something is not working as expected, contact Smart Pixel Blinds with your order number, the affected room or product, a description and helpful photos or video. We will discuss the appropriate next steps with you.

Your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply in addition to the written warranty and may continue after a stated warranty period ends.
