What works for a street-facing bedroom?
A sheer can soften the view from the footpath during the day. After dark, a bedside lamp can make movement visible from outside. Pair the sheer with a blockout curtain that draws sideways or a blockout roller blind that lifts above the glass.
Two ways to pair a sheer with blockout
| At your window | Sheer + blockout curtain | Sheer + blockout roller |
|---|---|---|
| Light during the day | Leave the sheer across and draw the blockout aside on its own track. Its folds need somewhere to sit. | Raise the roller behind the sheer. If you want the full view, only the sheer has to move sideways. |
| Privacy after dark | Draw the blockout across. On a centre-opening pair, check that the two panels meet when viewed from the street. | Lower the roller and leave the sheer in place. Check the view from an angle if a footpath runs alongside the window. |
| Early morning light | A track extending beyond the frame lets the fabric cover the sides. Light may still enter over the track, around the ends or at the centre opening. | An inside-mounted roller leaves space beside the cloth for its brackets. A roller fitted over the frame can give more overlap if the wall and sheer track allow it. |
| Doors and handles | On a sliding door, choose where both curtains will gather. Keep that stack away from the side you walk through. | Try the handle with the blind down. If the blind spans a doorway, you will need to raise it to walk through. |
Three checks at your window
How can I check privacy from the street?
If you have an existing sheer, leave it closed and use your usual bedside lighting. Ask someone to stand inside while you look from a safe spot outside at the angle a passer-by would see. Repeat in daylight. How much shows through depends on the weave and how bright each side of the window is.
What if the morning sun is waking me?
From the pillow, look for the first bright strip at the sides, across the top or between panels. A photo taken at that time helps us check the fabric coverage during a daytime visit. A blockout swatch shows how the cloth handles light. The fitted edges determine where light can get around it.
Can I keep the sheer or roller I already have?
Often you can. At the measure, open the window as you normally would. With an existing roller, we check the full roll and bottom rail clear the new sheer. With an existing sheer, we check the depth behind its folds and where the new brackets can be fixed.
