Indoor plantation shutters

You can angle the louvres for light while a shutter panel stays shut. To reach the glass or a window winder, you may need to swing the whole panel into the room. A good fit leaves space for both movements.

Choose a finish beside your window trim

Shutters sit right against the window frame. Hold two finish samples against the painted trim and look from a few steps back. You can choose a colour that blends with the trim or one that gives the frame more definition.

Choosing for your windows

Will the louvres clear my window handles?

The measurement that matters is the clear depth in front of the nearest obstruction. Check the handle, lock, winder and flyscreen, including where the handle sits when turned. Depth measured from bare glass can make a shallow recess look roomier than it is.

How deep does the recess need to be?

The frame and blade profile determine the clearance. For example, Woodworkers lists 65 mm of clear space for its 89 mm blade to rotate. That figure describes its own system. At your measure, we can compare the available depth with the requirements for the frame and blade under consideration.

Will the hinged shutter panel open past a tap or desk?

A panel may have room to tilt its louvres and still hit a tap as it swings. Picture the outside corner tracing an arc from the hinge. Check the nearest tap, benchtop, lamp or desk along that arc, then check that you can reach and operate the window behind it.

What if the recess is too shallow?

A face-mounted frame can bring the shutter forward and give the louvres more space behind them. It also moves the hinges further into the room. Check the new swing path before choosing that fit, especially over a kitchen sink.
